AI Chatbot Cost in India: What Each Type Costs in 2026

September 13, 2026 Uncategorized

As of 2026, putting an AI chatbot on an Indian business website costs roughly ₹1,500–8,000 a month for an off-the-shelf tool, or ₹60,000–2,50,000 to build a custom one that reads your own documents and connects to your systems. Running costs are small — a few hundred to a few thousand rupees a month in model usage for a typical site.

Want the whole picture before the price? Our guide to AI chatbots for business websites in India covers what they can and cannot do, grounding, and handover to a human. This page stays on cost.

The harder question is whether you need one. A chat widget that answers “what are your prices” wrongly is worse than no widget at all.

Three kinds of website chat, and what each costs

1. Rule-based chat widget

Buttons and canned answers, with a form to capture the lead. ₹0–2,000 a month, many free tiers. Adequate for a site with few enquiries and predictable questions, and it never says anything you did not write.

2. Off-the-shelf AI chatbot

You upload your website, brochures and FAQ, and it answers in natural language, in English and Indian languages, at any hour. ₹1,500–8,000 a month depending on conversation volume. Launch in days. Limits: it can only do what the tool supports, and deep integration with your CRM or inventory is usually unavailable or expensive.

3. Custom AI assistant

Built against your own systems — live pricing, stock, appointment slots, order status — with your rules about what it may and may not say. ₹60,000–2,50,000 to build, plus hosting and model usage. Worth it when the assistant must do something, not just explain something.

Where an AI chatbot genuinely earns its keep

  • After-hours enquiries. A large share of Indian consumer traffic arrives between 8pm and midnight. An assistant that answers, qualifies and books a callback converts visitors who would otherwise have gone elsewhere by morning.
  • Repetitive pre-sales questions. Prices, timelines, service areas, documents required, warranty terms. Stable answers, asked constantly.
  • Long or technical catalogues. When customers cannot find the right product or specification themselves, an assistant that narrows options beats a search box.
  • Regional languages. A visitor typing in Hindi or Marathi gets a proper answer instead of an English form.
  • Lead qualification. It asks the three questions your sales team always asks and passes a qualified lead rather than a name and a number.

Where it goes wrong

  • Invented answers. Ungrounded models will produce a plausible price or delivery date. In writing, on your site, that is a commitment your customer will quote back to you. Restrict the assistant to your own documents and require it to say when it does not know.
  • Stale content. The bot is exactly as current as the price list you uploaded. Nominate an owner and a review date.
  • No escape hatch. Every conversation needs an obvious route to a human — a phone number, a WhatsApp button, a callback form. Trapping an annoyed customer in a loop costs you the sale and the review.
  • Widget weight. Some chat scripts add a second or more to page load on mobile. Check the effect with our Core Web Vitals guide before and after installing.
  • Chat on a site nobody visits. With 200 visitors a month, a chatbot will not change anything. Traffic first, automation second.

Website chat or WhatsApp?

For many Indian businesses, the honest answer is WhatsApp. A visitor who taps a WhatsApp button gives you their number and a conversation that continues after they leave the site; a website chat session ends when the tab closes, and the visitor stays anonymous unless they fill a form.

The pragmatic setup is both: a WhatsApp button as the primary call to action for consumer businesses, and an AI assistant on the site for people who prefer to stay on the page or are researching at work. The same knowledge base can power both, which is where the real saving lies. Our chatbot versus human agent comparison covers where each belongs.

Launching one safely in four weeks

  1. Week 1 — gather the questions. Pull the last 200 enquiries from email, calls and WhatsApp and group them. Six or seven types usually dominate.
  2. Week 2 — write the knowledge base. Short, factual, dated: prices with effective dates, policies in plain language, service areas as an explicit list. This is the work that decides quality, and it cannot be outsourced to the tool.
  3. Week 3 — run it privately. Install on a staging page or for logged-in staff only. Ask it the 200 real questions and read every answer. Fix the knowledge base where it is wrong or vague.
  4. Week 4 — go live narrowly. Let it handle only the question types it answered well, hand everything else to a human, and review a sample of conversations weekly for the first month.

Rules worth setting from day one

Never quote a final price or promise a delivery date. Never discuss refunds, legal or medical matters. Always identify itself as an assistant. Always offer a human on request. Log every conversation and read the ones where it failed — that log is the cheapest customer research available, and it usually reveals gaps in your website copy rather than in the bot.

One compliance note: chat transcripts are personal data under the DPDP Act, and they often contain phone numbers. Know where they are stored, keep retention short, and reflect it in your privacy notice — our DPDP compliance checklist covers the requirements for websites.

The short version

  • As of 2026, expect ₹1,500–8,000 a month for an off-the-shelf AI chatbot, or ₹60,000–2,50,000 to build a custom assistant connected to your systems.
  • The quality of your knowledge base, not the model, decides whether it helps or embarrasses you.
  • For consumer businesses in India, a WhatsApp button usually out-earns a website chat widget — run both from one knowledge base.
  • Launch in draft mode on real questions, restrict it from prices and promises, and read the failure log weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AI chatbot cost for a website in India?

As of 2026, off-the-shelf AI chatbots cost roughly ₹1,500–8,000 a month depending on conversation volume, while a custom assistant built against your own systems costs ₹60,000–2,50,000 to develop plus small monthly model usage charges. Simple rule-based chat widgets are often free.

Will an AI chatbot give wrong information to my customers?

It can, if it is not restricted to your own documents. Ground it in an accurate, dated knowledge base, forbid it from quoting final prices or delivery dates, require it to admit when it does not know, and test it against real past enquiries before going live.

Is a website chatbot better than a WhatsApp button?

For most Indian consumer businesses, the WhatsApp button converts better, because it captures a phone number and the conversation survives the visitor leaving your site. A website assistant suits research-stage visitors and B2B buyers. Running both from one knowledge base is the practical answer.

Do I need a lot of traffic for a chatbot to be worth it?

Yes. With a couple of hundred visitors a month, a chatbot changes nothing and the same budget is better spent on getting found. Chat automation pays off when you have steady enquiry volume, especially outside working hours.

Does an AI chatbot slow down my website?

It can. Some chat scripts add a second or more to mobile load time. Load the widget after the page content, measure Core Web Vitals before and after installing, and drop any tool that measurably hurts your mobile performance.
