Custom ERP Cost for Indian Manufacturers: Bands, Modules and Timelines

September 23, 2026 Uncategorized

Manufacturers usually arrive at ERP the same way: production is tracked in one set of registers, dispatch in another, accounts in Tally, and nobody can answer what a job actually cost. The question is never only what an ERP costs. It is whether to configure a ready-made one or build your own.

Price bands in India, 2026

  • ₹3,00,000 to ₹8,00,000 — a focused custom system covering two or three modules, typically inventory, production orders and dispatch, for a single unit with 10 to 30 users.
  • ₹8,00,000 to ₹25,00,000 — a full custom ERP: purchase, stores, production planning, quality, dispatch, costing and reporting, with roles and approvals.
  • ₹25,00,000 and above — multi-unit or multi-company, shop floor data capture, machine integration, and heavy compliance or traceability requirements.
  • Ready-made route: Odoo or SAP Business One implementations commonly land between ₹4,00,000 and ₹30,00,000 including licences and the partner fee, depending on users and how much gets customised.

Annual upkeep for a custom build runs roughly 15 to 20% of the build cost. Budget it from day one; an ERP with no maintenance line item becomes unusable within three years.

What drives the number

The number of real workflows, not the number of screens

Quoting is usually done per module, but cost actually tracks the number of distinct approval paths and exceptions. A plant where every job follows one route is a fraction of the cost of one where sales can override pricing, production can substitute materials, and quality can send a batch back two steps.

Integration with what you already run

Tally is the common one. Two-way sync with Tally, e-invoice generation, e-way bills, and GST returns each add real effort. If your buyers require EDI or a portal upload, add that too. These integrations are frequently forgotten at quotation stage and then dominate the timeline.

Shop floor reality

Operators entering data on a phone in a noisy plant with oily hands is a design problem, not a screen. Barcode or QR scanning, offline capture that syncs later, and a genuinely large-button interface cost more to build and are the difference between an ERP that holds real data and one that gets filled in at the end of the week from memory.

Build or buy?

Buy a ready-made ERP when your processes are reasonably standard, you can adapt your workflow to the software, and you want to be live in weeks. Odoo in particular covers manufacturing, inventory and accounting sensibly for Indian SMEs.

Build custom when your process is your competitive advantage, when a package would need so much customisation that upgrades break, or when you have unusual costing, job work or traceability needs that packages handle awkwardly. Job work in particular — sending material out and receiving it back, with challans and reconciliation — is where standard packages often fall short in Indian plants.

Our wider comparison of custom software versus off-the-shelf applies here almost unchanged.

A realistic timeline

  1. Weeks 1–3: process mapping on the shop floor, not in a meeting room. Expect to discover two or three undocumented workflows.
  2. Weeks 4–10: core modules built and reviewed fortnightly with the people who will actually use them.
  3. Weeks 11–16: integrations, reports, data migration, parallel running alongside the old system.
  4. Weeks 17–20: training, go-live, and a support period where fixes are expected rather than treated as failures.

Four to five months is normal for a mid-sized custom build. Anyone promising a full manufacturing ERP in six weeks is either selling a configured package or planning to leave you with something half built.

How ERP projects fail here

  • No single owner inside the company. If nobody on your side can decide between two ways of doing something, the project stalls, and stalls are billed.
  • Data migration treated as an afterthought. Item masters and opening stock are almost always messier than expected. Clean them while development runs, not the week before go-live.
  • Training only the supervisors. If operators do not enter data, the reports are fiction.
  • No parallel run. Switching in one shot on the first of a month is how a plant loses a week of dispatches.

The short version

A focused custom ERP for an Indian manufacturer starts around ₹3,00,000 and a full one commonly lands between ₹8,00,000 and ₹25,00,000, plus 15 to 20% a year to keep it alive. Price the integrations and the shop floor interface honestly, insist on a parallel run, and if your processes are standard, seriously evaluate configuring a package first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom ERP cost in India for a manufacturing company?

A focused build covering inventory, production and dispatch typically costs ₹3,00,000 to ₹8,00,000. A full custom ERP with purchase, quality, costing and reporting usually lands between ₹8,00,000 and ₹25,00,000, with annual upkeep of roughly 15 to 20% of the build cost.

Is Odoo cheaper than building a custom ERP?

Usually yes for standard processes, and it is faster to go live. It stops being cheaper once heavy customisation is needed, because those changes have to be maintained through every upgrade. Compare on three-year cost, not the first invoice.

How long does an ERP implementation take?

Four to five months is realistic for a mid-sized custom build, including process mapping, integrations, data migration and a parallel run. Configured package implementations can be live in six to ten weeks if you accept the package workflow.
