How to Choose a Domain Name for an Indian Business

September 7, 2026 Uncategorized

A domain name is a decision you make in ten minutes and live with for ten years. Changing it later means losing rankings, reprinting everything, and confusing customers who bookmarked the old one.

Here is how to make the decision properly the first time, with the specific traps that catch Indian businesses.

.com or .in?

If your customers are mostly in India and the .com is taken, .in is a perfectly good choice and carries no ranking penalty. Google treats .in as a country-code domain, which actually helps for Indian searches and mildly hurts if you later target the US or Gulf markets.

Extension Best for Watch out for
.com Any business, especially with international ambitions Good names are taken or expensive
.in India-focused businesses Slight disadvantage for international targeting
.co.in Registered companies in India Longer to type and say aloud
.org NGOs, trusts, associations Looks odd for a commercial business
.shop, .store, .tech Ecommerce and startups with a memorable name Older Indian buyers still trust them less

The practical answer for most Indian SMEs: buy the .com if it is available at a normal price, otherwise buy the .in and also grab the .com variant later if it ever frees up.

The rules that actually matter

  1. Say it out loud on a phone call. If you have to spell it, it is wrong. This single test eliminates most bad candidates.
  2. No hyphens. People forget them, and they look cheap on a hoarding. The only exception is when the unhyphenated version reads as something unfortunate.
  3. No numbers. “Is that the digit 4 or the word four?” is a conversation you will have forever.
  4. Short beats descriptive. Under 15 characters if you can.
  5. Avoid deliberate misspellings. Your traffic goes to the correctly spelled competitor.

Should you put your city in the domain?

This is the most common question we get from Pune businesses, and the honest answer is: usually no.

Putting a city in the domain gives a very small local relevance signal and a large limitation. The moment you expand to Mumbai or Bangalore, the name works against you. Local ranking comes from your Google Business Profile, your location pages and your reviews, not from the domain string.

The exception is a business that will genuinely never leave one city and where the exact-match name is available and natural.

Brand name or keyword name?

Keyword domains such as puneweb-designers.in were an SEO advantage fifteen years ago. That advantage is gone, and what remains is the downside: a keyword name cannot become a brand, cannot expand into other services, and looks like a directory listing rather than a company.

Pick a brandable name. Every business we work with that has grown past a few crore in revenue has a brand name, not a keyword string.

Check these before you pay

  • Trademark search. Run the name through the Indian trademark registry search. A domain does not protect you from a trademark holder, and a legal notice two years in is expensive.
  • Social handle availability. Check Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube in the same session. A matching handle is worth more than a slightly better domain.
  • Domain history. If the domain was previously registered, check the Wayback Machine. A domain that once hosted spam or gambling content carries penalties you will inherit.
  • Pronunciation across languages. Say it in Marathi, Hindi and English. If it means something unintended in any of them, you will find out from a customer.

The registrar traps

Three things cost Indian businesses real money every year:

  1. First-year pricing. Rs. 99 for the first year and Rs. 1,400 on renewal is standard. Compare renewal prices, not introductory ones.
  2. Registering in the agency account. This is the single most common way businesses lose their domain. The domain must be registered in your name, in an account with your email and phone, that you can log into today. Ask your agency to prove it.
  3. Expiry. Turn on auto-renew, and keep a card on file that is not going to expire. A lapsed domain can be bought by anyone after the grace period, and buying it back costs many times the renewal fee.

Set a calendar reminder for the renewal date independently of the registrar email, which reliably lands in spam.

Defensive registrations: what is worth it

Buy the .com and .in of your exact brand name if both are affordable. Beyond that, registering fifteen variations is usually a waste for an SME. Redirect any extras to the main domain rather than letting them serve duplicate content.

Once you own it

  • Point it at your site with a single canonical version — either with www or without, not both serving content.
  • Get an SSL certificate; a browser warning ends the visit before the page loads.
  • Set up email on the domain. A business still using a Gmail address on its own quotations loses credibility for free.
  • Record the login, the renewal date and the DNS provider somewhere your team can find them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is .in as good as .com for an Indian business?

Yes, for a business serving Indian customers. Google treats .in as a country-code domain, which is a mild advantage for Indian searches and a mild disadvantage if you later target overseas markets. Buy the .com if it is available at a sensible price, otherwise .in is a perfectly sound choice.

Should I include my city in the domain name?

Usually not. The local ranking benefit is very small and comes mainly from your Google Business Profile, location pages and reviews, while the limitation is permanent the moment you expand to another city. Only consider it if you are certain you will always operate in one location.

Are keyword domains still good for SEO in India?

No. Exact-match keyword domains lost their ranking advantage years ago, and what remains is the downside: they cannot become a brand, they restrict you to one service, and they read like a directory listing rather than a company.

Who should the domain be registered to, me or my web agency?

You, in an account with your own email and phone number that you can log into today. Domains registered in an agency account are the most common way Indian businesses lose control of their web presence. Ask for proof of ownership and change it now if it is wrong.

How do I avoid losing my domain to expiry?

Turn on auto-renew with a card that will not expire soon, and set your own calendar reminder for the renewal date rather than relying on registrar emails, which frequently land in spam. Once past the grace period, anyone can register a lapsed domain and buying it back costs many times the renewal fee.
