Mobile App Maintenance Cost in India 2026: The Real Yearly Bill

What Mobile App Maintenance Costs in India in 2026

Budget Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 3,60,000 a year to keep a working Android and iOS app alive, which is roughly 15 to 25 percent of what the app cost to build. A Rs. 8,00,000 app is not a Rs. 8,00,000 decision. It is a Rs. 8,00,000 decision followed by a bill that arrives every single year after that, whether or not you add a single new feature.

This number is left out of almost every proposal in the Indian market. The quote covers design, development, testing and launch, then stops the day the app goes live. Twelve months later the conversation turns sour because nobody wrote the second year down. If you are still at the build stage, read our breakdown of mobile app development cost in India alongside this page.

What App Maintenance Actually Includes

Maintenance is not a support person waiting for your call. It is a set of recurring engineering obligations forced on you by Apple, Google and your own dependencies. None of them are optional, and none of them are triggered by you.

The Yearly Operating System Tax

Apple ships a major iOS version every autumn and Google ships a major Android version every year. Each release changes permissions, background execution rules, notification behaviour, storage access or the look of native controls. A camera prompt that now appears twice, a file picker that returns a different path, a background sync that silently stops after a few minutes: these are the normal outcomes of doing nothing. Somebody has to install the beta, test the flows, fix what moved and ship an update. That is two to five engineering days per platform per year, before a single bug report comes in.

SDKs, Libraries and the Dependency Chain

A typical Indian business app carries a payment gateway SDK, analytics, push notifications, a crash reporter, a maps library and thirty to sixty open source packages under those. Each has its own release cycle and deprecation notices. A gateway retires an old SDK. Firebase deprecates an API. A library publishes a security advisory. Ignore these for a year and the upgrades stop being individual jobs and become one tangled migration, which is exactly when a vendor quotes Rs. 1,50,000 for a two hour task.

The rest of the envelope is more familiar: crash fixing, security patching, server and database upkeep, store compliance work, and small content changes. The pattern matches website maintenance cost in India, with one difference that matters: a website you fix and deploy in ten minutes, while an app fix has to clear a store review before a single user sees it.

Why an Untouched App Stops Working in About Two Years

Nobody edits your code, and yet the app degrades. The mechanism is worth stating precisely.

Google Play enforces a target API level requirement. Apps that do not target a reasonably recent Android version become restricted for new users on newer devices, and you cannot publish an update at all until you raise the target. Apple applies pressure from the other side: new submissions must be built with a recent SDK, and apps left a long time without an update can be pulled under its housekeeping programmes. The certificates and provisioning profiles behind an iOS build also expire.

Add the third party layer. Payment gateways force TLS and API upgrades. Analytics vendors sunset old endpoints. An OS release tightens background limits. Stacked over twenty four months, the app that was perfect at launch is invisible to new Android devices, un-updatable without a migration, and crashing on the newest iPhone. The code did not rot. The ground under it moved.

The consequence is brutal: reviving a two year old abandoned app frequently costs 40 to 60 percent of a fresh build, because you pay for the migration and the re-testing without getting one new feature out of it. Maintenance is not an upsell. It is the cheaper path.

Store Fees Are Separate Line Items, Not Maintenance

These belong in your budget as their own rows, paid to Apple and Google directly. No honest vendor bundles them into a quote.

Apple Developer Program: Every Year, Forever

The Apple Developer Program is an annual membership at USD 99, around Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 10,500 a year depending on the exchange rate and card charges. Miss the renewal and your app is removed from the App Store. Put the renewal date in a shared calendar with two people on it, and use a company card that is not going to expire quietly.

Google Play: One Time Registration, Ongoing Obligations

Google Play charges a one time developer registration fee of USD 25, around Rs. 2,200. That part is genuinely one time. What is not one time is everything after it: identity and address verification, data safety declarations that must be kept accurate, and for newer personal accounts a closed testing period with real testers before production access is granted. Plan for setup and verification to take a couple of weeks, not an afternoon, and start it before the app is finished.

Servers, Databases and Third Party APIs

If your app talks to a backend, and almost every business app does, the infrastructure bill is maintenance whether you call it that or not. A small production setup with a managed database, backups and a staging environment runs Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 12,000 a month for most Indian SMB apps. Media storage and outbound SMS or OTP costs sit on top and are usage based, so they grow exactly when the business is doing well.

When a Third Party Changes Its Price

This is the cost line founders never model. An SMS provider revises per message rates. A maps API moves to a new pricing tier and your free quota disappears. None of it sits in anyone’s contract with you, and all of it hits your run rate without warning. The defence is architectural, not legal: keep every external integration behind one interface in your own code, so swapping a provider is a two day job and not a rewrite.

Three Maintenance Pricing Models, and When Each Is Right

Indian agencies price app maintenance in three ways. All three are legitimate. Choosing the wrong one is how you end up either overpaying for silence or underpaying for an app that is quietly falling behind.

Model What you pay Best for Where it hurts
Percentage of build cost 15 to 25 percent of build, per year Apps that are live, stable and business critical You pay the same in a quiet year as in a busy one
Fixed monthly retainer Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 60,000 a month for a set block of hours Apps still evolving, with a steady flow of small changes Unused hours usually lapse, so track them monthly
Pay per incident Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 2,500 per hour, or a prepaid hour pack Simple internal apps with few users and low risk No queue priority, and OS updates get skipped until something breaks

Percentage of Build Cost

The cleanest model for a revenue generating app. On a Rs. 10,00,000 build, 18 percent is Rs. 1,80,000 a year, and it buys proactive work: OS testing, SDK upgrades, patches and monitoring, done before you notice a problem. Insist the percentage is tied to a defined scope, not a vague promise of availability.

Fixed Monthly Retainer

Best when the app is still growing. Rs. 30,000 a month typically buys around twenty engineering hours. The critical clause is compliance work: mandatory OS and store updates should be covered by the retainer, not eaten out of your feature hours, otherwise your roadmap silently funds Google’s release calendar.

Pay Per Incident

Cheap on paper, expensive in practice for anything customer facing. It works only for a low stakes internal tool where two weeks of downtime is an inconvenience rather than a loss. If your app takes payments or bookings, do not choose this model.

A Realistic First Year Maintenance Budget

Here is a genuine annual budget for a mid sized Indian business app built at around Rs. 8,00,000, with a backend, payments, push notifications and both stores live.

Line item Typical cost per year Notes
Apple Developer Program Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 10,500 Annual, non negotiable, paid to Apple
Google Play registration Rs. 2,200 once One time, but verification is ongoing
Cloud hosting and database Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 1,44,000 Scales with users, media and backups
SMS, OTP and transactional email Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 90,000 Pure usage based, review quarterly
OS and SDK compliance updates Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1,20,000 The work that keeps the app publishable
Bug fixing and monitoring Rs. 36,000 to Rs. 90,000 Crash reporting, uptime alerts, patches
GST at 18 percent On all Indian service invoices Claimable as input credit if registered

Two things stand out. The infrastructure and messaging rows are variable and can double in a good year. And compliance is the largest fixed engineering row while producing nothing a customer can see. Uncomfortable, and still the right spend.

What Your AMC Contract Must Specify

Most app AMC agreements in India are one page of good intentions. A usable one answers four questions in writing.

Response times, by severity. Not one blanket promise. App down or payments failing: response inside two hours on a business day. Major feature broken: same day. Cosmetic issue: next sprint. Agree each definition at signing, when nobody is angry. Then ask what the escalation path is at 9pm on a Saturday. If the answer is a support email address, price the contract as business hours only.

The line between maintenance and a new feature. Fixing a checkout that broke after an iOS update is maintenance. Adding a wallet to that checkout is a feature. Write the distinction into the contract with two or three real examples, plus the rate for feature work.

Who holds the keys. The Android upload and signing keys, the iOS certificates, the store accounts, the cloud accounts, the domain, the repository. Each belongs in an account your company owns, with the vendor holding delegated access.

Exit terms. Thirty days notice, a documented handover, credentials transferred, and the last known good build handed over as source. If a vendor will not sign that clause, you have learned something important for free.

The Store Account Ownership Trap

This is the most expensive avoidable mistake in the Indian app market.

An agency offers to publish your app on its own developer account because it is faster and already verified. It is faster. It also means the app legally lives inside their business. When the relationship ends, and relationships end, you cannot move the app without their cooperation, because Apple and Google both require the current account holder to initiate a transfer. A vendor unhappy about losing the account can simply not click the button.

What you lose is not just the listing. You lose the reviews and ratings you spent two years collecting, the install base, the store URL printed on your marketing material, and any subscription billing attached to the app. Republishing means starting at zero ratings with a new URL.

The fix costs Rs. 12,000 and one afternoon. Open the Apple Developer Program membership and the Google Play Console account in your own company name, with your email domain, card and documents, then add the agency as a user with the access it needs. On Android, confirm who holds the app signing key and that you have a backup. If your app already sits on a vendor account, start the transfer conversation while everyone is still friendly.

GST and How to Book Maintenance Correctly

App maintenance from an Indian vendor is a service and attracts GST at 18 percent. A Rs. 30,000 monthly retainer is Rs. 35,400 out of your bank account. If your business is GST registered, that tax is normally available as input credit, so your real cost is the base amount. That alone is a reason to prefer a registered vendor over a cheaper unregistered freelancer. Our note on GST on website development services in India explains the same treatment for maintenance invoices.

Two practical points. Apple and Google fees go to foreign entities and are treated differently from your vendor’s invoice, so keep them as separate rows in the books. And invoice the AMC monthly or quarterly rather than as an annual lump sum: it keeps cash flow sane and gives you a review point if service quality drops.

When You Should Stop Maintaining the App

Not every app deserves to be kept alive, and a consultant who never says this is selling a retainer rather than advice. Retire the app when any two of these are true.

Usage does not justify the spend. If the app costs Rs. 2,00,000 a year and serves a few hundred monthly users who would be just as well served by a good mobile website, the app is a habit, not an asset. A responsive custom web application removes both the store dependency and the annual OS treadmill.

The codebase sits on a dead framework. If it was built on a technology the market has moved away from, every year of maintenance costs more and delivers less. Compare an honest rebuild quote against three more years of patching. The rebuild often wins.

It duplicates something you already run. Plenty of businesses maintain an app that mirrors their website or internal software. Fold it into the system you already pay for, then shut the app down properly: unpublish, tell your users, keep the backend read only for a quarter, export the data.

Retiring an app is a decision, not a failure. Paying a retainer for four years on something nobody opens is the failure. We are based in Pune and work with businesses across India, and this is a conversation we would rather have early than watch a client discover in year three.
