Ecommerce Product Page Checklist for Indian Online Stores

September 6, 2026 Uncategorized

Most Indian online stores spend their money on the homepage and their traffic on the product page. Ads land there, Google sends organic visitors there, and the add-to-cart decision happens there. Yet it is usually the least considered page on the site.

This is the checklist we run on every ecommerce project, ordered by how much it typically moves conversion for an Indian audience.

The first screen on a phone

Roughly four out of five Indian ecommerce sessions are on a phone, so the design decision that matters is what fits above the fold on a 390px screen:

  1. Product image, tappable to zoom.
  2. Product name and, if relevant, the brand.
  3. Price, with MRP struck through and the discount percentage if there is a genuine one.
  4. Rating and review count.
  5. Delivery estimate for the visitor’s pincode.
  6. Add to cart, always visible — sticky at the bottom as the user scrolls.

If the add-to-cart button scrolls out of sight and never comes back, you are losing sales you already paid for.

Images: the part that does the selling

  • Six to eight images minimum: front, back, detail, scale reference, in-use, and packaging.
  • One image with a human or a familiar object for scale. “Smaller than I expected” is the most common return reason in Indian ecommerce.
  • A short video where the product benefits from motion — fabric drape, appliance operation, assembly.
  • WebP format, correctly sized, with width and height set so the layout does not jump while loading.

Image weight is where most Indian stores lose their page speed. A product page shipping 12 MB of photographs will lose customers on 4G no matter how good the product is. See our Core Web Vitals fix guide for the specifics.

Trust elements Indian buyers look for

These are the ones that differ from Western checklists, and they matter:

  • COD availability, stated on the product page and not discovered at checkout. For a large share of Indian buyers this is the deciding factor.
  • Delivery estimate by pincode, not a generic “3–7 days”.
  • Return and exchange window, in plain language, with who pays the return shipping.
  • GST invoice availability, which matters for any B2B or professional purchase.
  • A real phone number or WhatsApp link. Indian buyers want to know a human exists before paying.

Stores that add a WhatsApp enquiry button on the product page consistently see pre-purchase questions they would otherwise have lost as silent exits. Handling those on a WhatsApp CRM keeps them from drowning the sales inbox.

Product information that prevents returns

Every return costs you twice: the reverse logistics and the lost sale. Most are preventable with better information.

Category What must be on the page
Apparel Size chart in cm, model height and worn size, fabric composition, wash care
Electronics Full specification table, box contents, warranty terms, compatibility
Furniture Exact dimensions, weight, assembly required or not, material and finish
Beauty Ingredients, skin type suitability, shelf life, shade in natural light
Food Weight, ingredients, allergens, shelf life, FSSAI number

Write these for the customer who is about to click away, not for the catalogue.

Reviews, done honestly

A product with no reviews converts poorly, and a product with only five-star reviews reads as fake. What works:

  • Verified purchase labels.
  • Customer photographs, which are more persuasive than any studio shot.
  • A visible distribution across ratings, including the three-star reviews.
  • Your own reply on negative reviews, which converts better than deleting them.

Automating the post-delivery review request is the cheapest way to build this. A message three days after delivery gets a materially higher response than an email a week later.

Technical items nobody sees but Google does

  • Product schema with price, availability, rating and review count — this is what produces the star ratings in search results.
  • Unique title and meta description per product, not a template that repeats the store name 400 times.
  • Canonical tags for variant URLs, so colour and size options do not create duplicate pages.
  • Out-of-stock handling — keep the page live with an availability status and a notify-me option rather than returning a 404, which throws away accumulated ranking.
  • Breadcrumbs, both for users and for the search result display.

What to remove

Three things routinely hurt Indian product pages:

  1. Exit-intent popups on mobile. They fire on scroll, block the buy button, and are a documented conversion loss.
  2. Fake urgency. “Only 2 left!” on every product trains buyers to distrust everything else on the page.
  3. Autoplay video with sound. It gets the tab closed.

The 10-minute audit

Open your best-selling product on your own phone, on mobile data, and check: can you see the price, delivery estimate and add-to-cart without scrolling? Do you know whether COD is available? Can you tell how big the product actually is? Do you know what happens if you want to return it?

If any answer is no, that is your next fix — and it will move revenue faster than a redesign will. For the wider build decisions, our breakdown of ecommerce website development cost in India covers what each level of store actually costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What must be visible on the first screen of a product page on mobile?

The product image, name, price with any genuine discount, rating and review count, a delivery estimate for the buyer pincode, and an add-to-cart button that stays visible as the page scrolls. Roughly four out of five Indian ecommerce sessions are on a phone, so this screen decides the sale.

How do I reduce returns on an Indian ecommerce store?

Give the information that prevents wrong expectations: a size chart in centimetres with model height and worn size for apparel, exact dimensions and assembly details for furniture, full specifications and box contents for electronics, and at least one image with a scale reference. Size and scale surprises are the most common return reason.

Should I show COD availability on the product page?

Yes. For a large share of Indian buyers cash on delivery is the deciding factor, and discovering at checkout that it is unavailable is a guaranteed abandonment. State it on the product page along with the delivery estimate and the return window.

What should happen to a product page when the item goes out of stock?

Keep the page live with an out-of-stock status and a notify-me option. Returning a 404 or deleting the page throws away whatever ranking and backlinks that URL has accumulated, and you will have to earn them again when the product returns.

Do product reviews really affect conversion in India?

Yes, and the pattern matters as much as the score. Verified purchase labels, customer photographs, a visible spread of ratings including three-star reviews, and your own replies to negative ones all build more trust than a page of unbroken five-star ratings, which reads as fabricated.
