When a website link shows a blank box, a random logo or the wrong title on WhatsApp, the cause is almost always missing or broken Open Graph tags: small lines in the page’s head that tell WhatsApp which title, description and image to show. Add og:title, og:description, og:image (a 1200 by 630 pixel image on a full https URL) and og:url to every page, keep the image under a few hundred kilobytes, then change the image file name to beat WhatsApp’s cache. Most sites can be fixed in an hour.
It matters more in India than almost anywhere else, because business links travel on WhatsApp first. In our audit of 1,452 Indian business websites, 49% had a broken or missing share preview, which means every time a happy customer forwards the link, it looks like spam.
What a good preview needs
| Tag | What it controls | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| og:title | Bold headline in the preview | Same generic title on every page, or Home |
| og:description | One or two lines under the title | Missing, so the app grabs random page text |
| og:image | The picture | Relative URL, http instead of https, huge file, or a logo that crops badly |
| og:url | The canonical address of the page | Pointing to a staging or old domain |
| og:type | website or article | Usually harmless if missing, but good to include |
In the page head, the tags look like this:
<meta property="og:title" content="Website Development in Pune"><meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og/home-v2.jpg">
The image: size, format and design
- Size: 1200 x 630 pixels is the standard that works across WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Format: JPG or PNG. Some apps still handle WebP and SVG poorly for previews, so do not rely on them here.
- File weight: keep it light, well under 300 KB. Oversized images are a common reason WhatsApp shows no image at all.
- URL: full absolute address on https, publicly reachable, not behind a login or a firewall rule that blocks bots.
- Design: brand colour, a short headline of five to seven words, and your logo. Keep text away from the edges, because some apps crop to a square.
How to fix it, platform by platform
- WordPress: most SEO plugins have a Social or Open Graph section. Set a default image for the whole site, then set a custom image and title on the pages people share most. View the page source afterwards and search for og:image to confirm it appears exactly once.
- Shopify: set the social sharing image in the theme settings; product pages use the product image automatically. Check that the first product image is a clean one.
- Custom or React sites: the tags must be in the HTML the server sends. Single-page apps that insert tags with JavaScript often show nothing, because WhatsApp does not run your JavaScript. Use server-side rendering or pre-rendering for shareable pages.
- Landing pages on builders: each tool has a social settings panel; fill it on every page before running ads.
Beating the cache
WhatsApp caches previews, so a fix may not appear immediately. The dependable trick is to change the image URL, for example from home.jpg to home-v2.jpg, or to add a version parameter such as ?v=2. New shares then fetch the new image. Previews already sitting in old chats will not change. To check before sharing widely, paste the link into a chat with yourself, or use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, which reads the same tags and can re-scrape a URL.
Checklist
- og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url present on every page, once each.
- Image 1200 x 630, JPG or PNG, under 300 KB, absolute https URL.
- Titles specific to the page, not the site name repeated.
- Tags present in the server HTML, not injected later by JavaScript.
- Tested by sharing to yourself on WhatsApp after a file-name change.
Getting the preview right is part of the same basic hygiene we cover in our SEO audit checklist, and it pairs naturally with adding WhatsApp to your website.
Frequently Asked Questions
What image size works best for WhatsApp link previews?
A 1200 by 630 pixel image in JPG or PNG is the widely used standard for Open Graph and displays well on WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn. Keep the file small, ideally well under 300 KB, and keep important text away from the edges, because some apps crop the image.
I fixed the tags but WhatsApp still shows the old preview. Why?
WhatsApp and other apps cache previews. Changing the image file name, or adding a version parameter to the image URL, forces a fresh fetch. Previews already sent in chats will not change; new shares will show the update.
Do I need a different preview image for every page?
Not necessarily. A good default image for the whole site is the minimum. Pages people share often, such as products, blog posts, offers and landing pages, benefit from their own image and title.
Does the link preview affect SEO?
Open Graph tags are not a Google ranking factor. They affect how many people click your link when it is shared on WhatsApp and social apps, which is traffic and trust you would otherwise lose.
Can a WordPress plugin handle this?
Yes. Most SEO plugins let you set a default social image and a per-page title, description and image. Check the output by viewing the page source for og:image, and make sure no second plugin is printing conflicting tags.
