Most SEO audits sold in India are a fifty-page PDF from a tool, with every warning marked critical. This checklist is the opposite: the checks that change rankings for an ordinary Indian business website, in the order they matter, and each one answerable in a few minutes with free tools.
Work top to bottom and stop when you have found three real problems — fixing three things beats listing thirty.
Part 1: Can Google see your site at all?
Nothing else matters until these pass.
- Indexing count. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If the number of results is far below your page count, indexing is your problem, not keywords.
- Stray noindex tags. The most common cause of a new site ranking for nothing is the “Discourage search engines” box left ticked in WordPress after launch. Check Settings, then Reading.
- robots.txt. Open /robots.txt and confirm it does not disallow your own pages or your sitemap.
- Canonical tags. View the page source of a service page and check the canonical points to itself, not to the homepage or a staging URL. Sites rebuilt from a template often carry the developer’s staging address into production.
- Sitemap. Open your sitemap and confirm it lists current pages. Submit it in Search Console — our Search Console setup guide covers the details.
- HTTPS and one address. Both www and non-www should resolve to a single version over HTTPS, with everything else redirecting.
Part 2: Does each page target something?
- Title tags. Unique on every page, around 55 characters, with the search term and a benefit. “Home”, “Services” and “Untitled” are wasted.
- Meta descriptions. Unique, 140–155 characters, written as ad copy rather than a summary. A single description repeated site-wide is a real and common defect.
- One H1 per page, containing what the page is about.
- One page per service. A single “Services” page listing eight services cannot rank for any of them. Split it.
- Location on the page. For local businesses, the city and area should appear naturally in the title, the H1 and the text — not stuffed thirty times in the footer.
- Thin pages. Pages under roughly 300 words rarely rank. Merge or expand them.
- Duplicate area pages. Copying a page and swapping the locality name is the single fastest way to have a whole section de-indexed. Each page needs its own specifics.
- Image alt text on meaningful images, describing the image rather than repeating keywords.
Part 3: Speed and mobile
- PageSpeed Insights on mobile for your homepage and one service page. Read the field data if it appears — that is real users on real Indian networks.
- Image weight. Photographs uploaded straight from a phone at 4–6 MB are the most common cause of a slow Indian business site. Resize and convert to WebP.
- Layout shift. Content jumping while the page loads costs conversions and rankings; set width and height on images.
- Third-party scripts. Every chat widget, analytics tag and pixel adds load time. Keep what you use, remove the rest. Our Core Web Vitals guide covers the fixes in order.
- Tap targets and font size. Buttons at least 44 pixels, inputs at 16 pixels or iPhones zoom on focus.
- Test on a mid-range Android over mobile data, not on office Wi-Fi. It is a different website at 3G speeds.
Part 4: Local SEO
- Google Business Profile claimed and complete — category, hours, phone, service area, photographs. For most local Indian businesses this drives more enquiries than the website does.
- NAP consistency. Name, address and phone identical on the website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Reviews. A steady trickle, replied to. Bursts of reviews get filtered.
- Local schema — LocalBusiness markup with address, phone and hours.
- Embedded map and directions on the contact page.
Part 5: Content and links
- Internal links. Every important page should be linked from at least three other pages. Orphan pages that exist only in the sitemap rarely rank.
- Broken links. Run a free crawler and fix 404s, particularly ones linked from your own menu.
- External links to you. Check Search Console’s Links report. If it is nearly empty, your ranking ceiling is a link problem, and no amount of new content will move it.
- Content honesty. Remove fake testimonials, invented client counts and stock-photo teams. These damage conversion more than ranking, and they are easy for buyers to spot.
- Analytics in place so you can tell whether any of this worked — see our GA4 setup guide.
How to prioritise what you find
Sort your findings into three groups. Blocking — indexing problems, noindex tags, a site that does not load on mobile; fix today. High return — titles and descriptions on pages that already get impressions, splitting a services page, compressing images; fix this month. Long term — links, reviews, new content; these need consistent work over quarters and no audit will shortcut them.
One honest warning: for most Indian business websites that already have decent content, the binding constraint is external links and reviews, not on-page tweaks. If your audit produces thirty small fixes and you implement all of them, expect a modest lift — the larger movement comes from other businesses linking to you and from a Google Business Profile that is genuinely active.
The short version
- Check indexing first — noindex tags, robots.txt, canonicals and sitemap — before touching keywords.
- Give every service its own page with a unique title and description, and never duplicate pages across localities.
- Test speed on a mid-range Android over mobile data, and compress the photographs first.
- Fix three real problems rather than logging thirty warnings, and accept that links and reviews decide the ceiling.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a business website be audited for SEO?
A full audit once or twice a year is enough for most Indian small businesses, plus a focused check after any redesign, migration or CMS change. Monitoring indexing and search performance monthly in Search Console catches most problems long before a full audit would.
Can I do an SEO audit myself without paid tools?
Yes, for the checks that matter. Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, a site: search and viewing page source cover indexing, titles, canonicals, speed and mobile issues. Paid crawlers mainly save time on large sites; they do not find different problems on a 20-page website.
What is the most common SEO problem on Indian business websites?
Three appear constantly: a noindex setting left on after launch, one generic meta description repeated across every page, and photographs uploaded at several megabytes that make the site slow on mobile data. All three are quick to fix and all three materially affect results.
Will fixing on-page SEO get me to the first page?
On-page fixes remove obstacles and help you rank for terms you are already close to. For competitive commercial terms, external links and an active Google Business Profile with steady reviews decide the ceiling, and no amount of on-page work substitutes for them.
Do duplicate pages for different localities help local SEO?
No. Copying a page and swapping the area name is the fastest route to having a whole section dropped from the index. If you build location pages, each needs genuinely different content — local projects, directions, area-specific details — or it is better not to build them at all.
