Law Firm Website Design for Advocates and Chambers

A Rule 36 compliant site that states what your chambers practise, who your advocates are and where you appear — no success claims, no testimonials. Seven pages from ₹24,999, live in 7–10 working days.

Law Firm Website Design

An advocate’s website is the one piece of marketing the Bar Council has an opinion about. Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules bars advertising: no success rates, no client testimonials, no comparison with other counsel, nothing self-laudatory. What is permitted is narrow and factual — name, contact details, enrolment particulars, areas of practice, professional qualifications. Most firm sites either ignore this and read like an insurance advert, or overcorrect into a single page with a phone number.

We treat the restriction as the brief rather than a nuisance. The site earns trust by being useful: practice-area explainers written in plain language, published articles and paper presentations, reported matters where citation is permissible, the enrolment and qualification of every member of the team, the courts and jurisdictions where the chambers appear. Enquiry goes through a form with a stated confidentiality note, not a lead magnet. The three demos below — Ashford & Vane, Mehra & Associates and Halcyon — are live and open on a phone.

The referral arrives first, the search happens second

Instructions in India still arrive by referral — a company secretary, a chartered accountant, a client from an earlier matter, a senior who cannot take the brief. The website rarely creates that introduction. It decides what happens next. The name gets typed into Google before the first call, and what loads either makes the meeting a formality or makes it a risk. A general counsel checking three names for a commercial arbitration wants enrolment particulars, the forums where the chambers appear, what the team has written on the point, and some sign that the firm will still be there in three years.

That check fails on most chambers websites for one of two reasons. Either the site says nothing that can be verified — a stock gavel photograph, a paragraph about justice, four practice areas listed as single words — or it says far too much and walks straight into Rule 36 by promising outcomes, quoting a satisfied client, or calling the firm the leading name for something. The second is the costlier mistake. A screenshot of one self-laudatory line is a complaint to the State Bar Council waiting to be filed, and answering it takes more time than the line ever earned.

There is a search reality worth stating openly too. Nobody with a serious commercial matter searches for “best lawyer”. They search a section, a notice, a procedure — “reply to Section 138 notice time limit”, “RERA complaint for possession delay”, “GST show cause notice reply” — and they read whoever has explained it clearly. That is the one door a compliant website can open, and it is permitted, because an explainer is information rather than solicitation.

Practice notes, conflict checks and a document login

The build is small in page count and heavy in detail. Each item below exists because a firm asked for it after launch rather than before.

  • One page per practice area that explains the procedure, the forum and the realistic timeline, written for a client rather than for another advocate.
  • An article and paper archive with author, date and forum on every entry, so a published note has a permanent address the firm can cite.
  • Reported matters listed by citation, court and the question of law, with no description of the outcome and a short line explaining why the list reads that way.
  • Team pages carrying enrolment number, State Bar Council of enrolment, year of enrolment, degrees, languages and the benches where each member appears.
  • Offices and jurisdictions set out by forum — District Court, High Court, NCLT, DRT, consumer commission, arbitration seats — instead of one address line.
  • An enquiry form with a conflict-check field for the opposite party’s name, a stated confidentiality note, and a line making clear that sending it does not create an advocate–client relationship.
  • Appointment scheduling with slots that avoid court hours, and the consultation fee stated where the firm charges for a first meeting.
  • A client document login with matter-wise folders, download logging, no search indexing and a forced password reset on first use.
  • An engagement and billing page explaining how the firm charges — per appearance, hourly or on retainer — so the fee conversation starts from the same place.
  • An internship and careers page with its own form, which keeps a few hundred student emails a year out of the partners’ inbox.
  • Hindi or regional-language versions of the district court and consumer practice pages, where the client actually reads in that language.
  • Organisation and person structured data, Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics, all set up in the firm’s own account as part of the web development service.

The directories will hold the top of the page, and that is fine

Search “advocate near me” in any Indian city and the first screen belongs to LawRato, Justdial, Sulekha and similar listing sites. They carry thousands of profiles and a review system that an advocate cannot honestly use anyway, and no chambers website is going to displace them on that term. Chasing it is a waste of budget, and the enquiries it produces are mostly fee comparisons. The winnable ground is the statute-level question, where a 900-word note on a section, filed under a practice area and linked from it, will out-rank a directory page that says nothing. Two such notes a month, sustained, is what our SEO work on a legal site actually consists of.

There is also a case for spending less. A two-advocate practice that runs entirely on referrals from two corporate clients and is not taking fresh work does not need fifteen pages and a blog. A seven-page site at ₹24,999 that states the credentials correctly is the whole requirement, and we will say so rather than sell the larger tier.

After launch, the archive is the part that decides whether the site is worth anything in a year. Nominate one associate to own it, give them two notes a month, and treat it as billable internal time. We hand over the editor, the 40-point pre-launch checklist and a short recording of how to publish. Firms that would rather not touch it keep us on the care plan at ₹1,499 per month and send drafts by WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

No. Rule 36 bars advertising and solicitation, not information. A site carrying your name, contact details, enrolment particulars, areas of practice and professional qualifications sits inside the rule. What we keep off it is anything promising an outcome, claiming a success rate, quoting a client or comparing your chambers with another firm. The full copy goes to you for review before it is published.
Business Website is ₹24,999 for up to seven pages, mobile-first design, contact form, on-page SEO basics, SSL and 30 days support, delivered in 7–10 working days. Business Pro + SEO is ₹49,999 for up to fifteen pages plus the article blog, SEO for ten keywords, Search Console and Analytics, and 60 days support. The client document login is ₹9,999. Prices exclude 18% GST, paid 50% to start and 50% at launch.
Our office is in Pune and roughly sixty per cent of our clients are elsewhere in India. Delivery is remote: a WhatsApp group for daily updates, Google Meet for design and content reviews, and a shared checklist for the material we need from you. Domain, hosting, admin logins and analytics are created in the firm’s own name, and a GST invoice is raised at each milestone.
No. Testimonials and success claims fall squarely within what Rule 36 prohibits, and one screenshot is enough for a complaint to the State Bar Council. Reported matters can usually be listed by citation, forum and the point of law involved, without describing the outcome as a win. We draft that section conservatively and flag anything doubtful for your call before publishing.
We do, from a questionnaire and a call with the advocate handling each practice area. You receive the draft, correct the law, and nothing goes live without your approval. Photographs are licensed stock or a guided phone shoot at your office — a plain portrait against a clean wall reads better than a stock image of a courtroom that is not yours.
It is password-protected, kept out of search indexes, served over SSL, and every download is logged with a time stamp. Even so, no login should hold material you would not put on a firm laptop. Most chambers use it for filed copies, cause-list updates and invoices, and keep strategy on email or in person. We set the folder structure per matter and hand over admin rights.
