To show up in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, a business website needs four things: pages that rank reasonably in normal search, content written answer-first so a tool can quote a paragraph directly, clean structured data that states who you are and where, and consistent mentions of your business on other trusted sites. On top of that, allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt and add an llms.txt file. None of this replaces SEO; it is SEO written for a reader that summarises.
How AI answer engines pick sources
Most AI assistants that answer questions about businesses run a web search behind the scenes, read a handful of pages, and write a summary with citations. That has three consequences:
- If you don’t rank anywhere for the question, you are unlikely to be read at all.
- If your page buries the answer under three paragraphs of introduction, the tool quotes someone else.
- If other sites describe your business inconsistently, the tool may get your details wrong or leave you out.
The five levers
| Lever | What to do | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Answer-first content | Open every key page with a direct 60-120 word answer to its main question | Medium |
| Structured data | Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Article schema, consistent with the page | Low to medium |
| Crawler access | Allow AI search bots in robots.txt; make pages render without JavaScript | Low |
| llms.txt | A short plain-text summary and link list at the site root | Low |
| Mentions and reviews | Directory listings, press, partner sites, Google reviews that name your services | High, ongoing |
1. Write answer-first
For every service page and guide, write the first paragraph as if it were the whole answer. State the what, the who, and the price range or timeline if relevant. Then expand. Use headings that match real questions, tables for comparisons, and short lists for steps. This helps human readers skim, and it is the format AI tools lift from.
Also be specific. “We build websites” is invisible; “We build WhatsApp-integrated websites for clinics in Pune, delivered in two to three weeks” is a quotable fact.
2. Make your identity machine-readable
Organization and LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, phone, services and social profiles gives every crawler the same facts. Keep them identical to your Google Business Profile. Our SEO audit checklist covers how to check them.
3. Let the crawlers in
- Check robots.txt for rules that block AI crawlers. Some security plugins and CDN settings block them by default.
- Different providers use separate crawlers for search and for training; their documentation lists the user-agent names. Decide deliberately rather than by accident.
- Make sure important content is in the HTML the server sends. Pages that only appear after JavaScript runs are often invisible to crawlers.
4. Add an llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text or Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt with a one-paragraph description of the business and links to the pages that matter most, each with a one-line note. It is not an official standard and not every tool reads it, but it takes half an hour and costs nothing.
5. Earn mentions
AI tools lean on what others say about you. Consistent listings in relevant directories, industry associations, local news, partner sites and genuine Google reviews that mention specific services all feed the picture. This is slow work, the same authority-building that drives normal rankings. Our guide to getting more Google reviews covers the review side.
Measuring it
- List ten questions your customers actually ask.
- Ask them each month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and note whether you appear and which sources are cited.
- In Google Analytics, watch referral traffic from AI tools.
- When a competitor is cited instead of you, read the cited page. It usually answers the question more directly.
What not to do
- Don’t stuff pages with “best in India” claims; tools summarise facts, not adjectives.
- Don’t publish dozens of near-identical pages hoping one gets picked; thin duplicates hurt normal SEO first.
- Don’t hide key facts in images or PDFs only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Most AI answer tools draw on web search results, so pages that rank and are clearly written have the best chance of being cited. The additions are answer-first writing, clean structured data, crawler access for AI bots, and consistent mentions of your business across the web.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of your site that summarises what the site is and links to its most important pages, written for AI tools. It is not an official standard and support varies, but it is cheap to add and does no harm.
Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?
Blocking them keeps your content out of those systems, including their search features. Most businesses that want to be recommended should allow the crawlers used for AI search. If you have content you do not want used for training, check each provider’s documentation, since some separate search crawling from training.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?
Organic AI answers cannot be bought the way search ads are. Advertising products inside AI assistants are evolving, but the recommendations people trust most still come from what the tools find about you on the web, which is earned through content, reviews and mentions.
How do I check whether AI tools mention my business?
Ask the tools the questions your customers ask, such as best website developer in Pune or WhatsApp CRM for clinics, and note whether you appear and which sources they cite. Repeat monthly. Also watch referral traffic from AI tools in Google Analytics.
