Google Ads for B2B Manufacturers and Exporters in India

Why most manufacturing accounts leak money

A typical B2B manufacturing account in India looks like this: twenty broad keywords for the product category, automatic match types, one ad group, all traffic to the homepage, conversions counted as page views. It spends a budget and produces enquiries from students, job seekers and competitors.

Nothing about B2B makes Google Ads unsuitable. The problem is that the default setup is built for consumer e-commerce, where volume is the point. In B2B, one order can be worth lakhs and the monthly search volume is tiny. You want precision, not reach.

The search terms worth paying for

Group every keyword by what the searcher is doing. Only two of these groups deserve budget at the start.

  • Buying now — bid on these. Product plus a commercial word: “manufacturer”, “supplier”, “wholesale”, “bulk”, “price”, “exporter”, “OEM”. Someone searching “industrial gearbox manufacturer in Pune” is sourcing.
  • Specification searches — bid on these too. Grade, size, standard, material: “SS 304 pipe 2 inch supplier”, “IS 2062 plate”. Low volume, almost no waste, and often the cheapest enquiries in the account because the intent is unmistakable.
  • Research stage — do not bid yet. “What is a gearbox”, “types of steel plate”. Fine as content on your site; expensive as ads.
  • Jobs, courses, projects — exclude aggressively. This is where B2B manufacturing budgets actually disappear.

Build the negative keyword list before the campaign goes live, not after. At minimum: job, jobs, vacancy, salary, internship, training, course, project, pdf, ppt, diagram, free, how to make, repair, second hand, used, scrap, wikipedia. In Indian manufacturing categories these terms often account for a large share of early clicks.

Campaign structure that stays controllable

  • One campaign per product family, so budget follows margin rather than volume.
  • Phrase and exact match only for the first few months. Broad match on a manufacturing term is an education in irrelevant traffic.
  • Manual CPC or maximise clicks to begin with. Automated bidding needs conversion data it does not yet have; with five enquiries a month it has nothing to learn from.
  • Location targeting set to “presence”, not “presence or interest”. The default sends you enquiries from people merely reading about your city.
  • Ad schedule matched to your office hours. A B2B enquiry at 2 am on Sunday is usually not a buyer, and an unanswered enquiry is a wasted click either way.
  • Separate campaign for export enquiries if you want them, with its own geography and its own landing page. Mixing domestic and export intent in one campaign makes both perform worse.

The landing page decides the cost per enquiry

Sending ad traffic to the homepage is the most expensive habit in the account, because a homepage answers nobody’s specific question. A product landing page for a manufacturing buyer needs:

  • The product name as the headline, matching the search term they typed.
  • A specification table. Grades, sizes, tolerances, standards, capacity. This is what the buyer is scanning for, and its absence reads as “not a real manufacturer”.
  • Photographs of the actual plant and product. Stock images are recognised instantly and cost you credibility.
  • Minimum order quantity and lead time. Stating these filters out the enquiries you cannot serve, which lowers cost per useful enquiry even if it raises cost per enquiry.
  • Certifications — ISO, BIS, CE, whatever applies — with the certificate number.
  • A WhatsApp button next to the form. In Indian B2B, a large share of buyers will message rather than fill a form, and the ones who message convert faster. Use a prefilled message naming the product so you know which page they came from.
  • A downloadable catalogue or datasheet behind a short form. Three fields, not twelve.

If you only change one thing in a manufacturing account, change the destination from the homepage to a product page like this. It usually moves cost per enquiry more than any bidding change.

Tracking, so you can tell good spend from bad

Most manufacturing accounts cannot say which keyword produced an order, which means optimisation is guesswork. The minimum setup:

  1. Conversion tracking on the form submission, not on a page view. Fire on the success event.
  2. WhatsApp clicks as a conversion. For B2B this is often the majority of real enquiries and it is the one most commonly untracked — the setup is in Google Ads conversion tracking for India.
  3. Phone call tracking if you publish a number, which in manufacturing you should.
  4. Catalogue downloads as a secondary conversion. Not an enquiry, but a useful signal.
  5. A field in your own records for “how did you find us”, filled by whoever answers. Imperfect, and still the only thing that connects a keyword to an order months later.

Then review the search terms report weekly for the first two months. Not the keyword report — the search terms report, which shows what people actually typed. Every irrelevant term goes into negatives the same day.

What you can afford to pay

Instead of asking what a click costs, work from your own numbers. If an order is worth ₹2,00,000 at 20% margin, and you close one in five qualified enquiries, then a qualified enquiry is worth around ₹8,000 in gross margin. At a 10% form conversion rate, you can pay up to ₹800 a click and still be ahead — a figure that makes most manufacturing keywords look cheap.

Run that arithmetic before you set a budget. It converts the whole discussion from “ads are expensive” into a number you can test against, and it is the same logic as the broader marketing ROI tracking approach.

When ads are the wrong tool

Three situations where the budget belongs elsewhere:

  • Almost nobody searches your product. Some industrial categories have genuinely negligible search volume in India. Exhibitions, distributor networks and outbound work better, and the website’s job is credibility rather than discovery.
  • You cannot answer enquiries within the hour. Paid clicks with slow follow-up are money spent to lose to a faster competitor. Fix the response process first — a WhatsApp CRM with assignment is often the cheaper fix.
  • You have no product pages. Build four good ones first. Ads to a weak site is the most reliable way to conclude that ads do not work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Google Ads work for B2B manufacturers in India?

They work when the campaign targets buying-stage search terms, uses phrase and exact match with a strong negative list, and sends people to a product-specific page with a specification table and a WhatsApp option. They waste money when broad category keywords on automatic matching send traffic to a homepage, which is how most manufacturing accounts are set up.

What is a realistic cost per enquiry for B2B manufacturing?

It varies far too much by product to quote a single figure, and anyone quoting one has not seen your category. Work out your own instead: take the margin on one order and your historical close rate on enquiries, and that tells you what an enquiry is worth and therefore what you can afford to pay for one.

Should a manufacturer bid on competitor names?

It is allowed and sometimes effective, but keep competitor names out of the ad text itself, expect a lower click-through rate, and send the click to a page that genuinely compares rather than to your homepage. For most manufacturers, product and specification keywords are a better use of the same budget.

Which negative keywords matter most in Indian manufacturing campaigns?

Job-related and study-related terms, because they generate a large share of early clicks and never produce an order: job, jobs, vacancy, salary, internship, training, course, project, pdf, ppt, diagram, free, how to make, repair, second hand, used, scrap and wikipedia. Add them before launch and keep extending the list from the search terms report every week.

Is Indiamart enough, or do I need my own ads?

Marketplaces bring volume and put you next to every competitor on price, with the relationship owned by the platform. Your own ads and product pages cost more per enquiry at first and give you a buyer who came looking for you specifically. Most manufacturers do best running both, while making sure their own site can actually convert the traffic it gets.
