Web Hosting Cost in India: The Short Answer
Web hosting in India costs Rs. 200 to Rs. 800 a month for shared hosting, Rs. 900 to Rs. 4,000 for a VPS, and Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000 for managed cloud hosting. Add 18% GST. The number that actually matters is not the one on the banner, though – it is the renewal price, which is usually two to three times higher.
Hosting is the cheapest line item in most website budgets and the one most likely to quietly cost you customers. This guide covers what each tier really gives you and when it is worth moving up.
The tiers, and who each one is for
| Tier | Monthly (excl. GST) | What you actually get | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared | Rs. 200 – Rs. 800 | Space on a server with hundreds of other sites. cPanel, one-click WordPress, limited resources you share with strangers. | Brochure sites, portfolios, local business sites under a few thousand visits a month |
| VPS | Rs. 900 – Rs. 4,000 | Guaranteed CPU and RAM on a partitioned server. Root access, your own configuration, no noisy neighbours. | Busy WordPress sites, small ecommerce, anything with a login or a database doing real work |
| Managed cloud | Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 25,000 | Someone else handles the server: updates, security, scaling, backups, monitoring. You just deploy. | Stores taking real orders, SaaS products, any site where an hour of downtime is expensive |
| Dedicated | Rs. 8,000 – Rs. 40,000+ | A whole physical machine. Maximum control, and maximum responsibility. | Heavy applications, compliance requirements, unusual workloads |
Most Pune businesses are on shared hosting and most should be. The move to a VPS is worth making when your site is slow at busy times, not because a salesperson said cloud.
The renewal trap
This is the single most common way businesses overpay, and almost every host in the market does it.
The advertised price – Rs. 99 or Rs. 149 a month – applies to your first term only, and usually only if you prepay for three or four years. At renewal, the same plan costs two to three times as much. A plan advertised at Rs. 149 routinely renews around Rs. 400 to Rs. 500.
None of this is hidden exactly, but it is written where people do not look. Two habits protect you:
- Find the renewal rate before you buy, not after. If the host makes it hard to find, that tells you something.
- Do not prepay four years to save on a first term. You are betting that a host you have never used will still suit you in 2030.
What actually affects your website
Hosting specifications are marketed in numbers that mostly do not matter. Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage and 99.9% uptime appear on every plan. Four things genuinely change how your site behaves.
Server response time. How long the server takes to start sending your page. Anything above about 600ms is a problem you can feel, and it is usually a hosting problem rather than a design one.
Resource limits. Shared plans cap CPU and memory. Exceed them and your site slows or throws errors, often at your busiest moment. These caps are rarely advertised clearly.
Data centre location. An Indian or Singapore data centre serves Indian visitors noticeably faster than a US one. A CDN closes much of the gap, but the origin still matters for anything dynamic.
Backups. Whether they exist, how often they run, how far back they go, and crucially whether restoring one is free. Discovering the answer after a problem is an expensive way to learn.
Does cheap hosting hurt your SEO?
Indirectly, yes, and the mechanism is speed rather than anything mysterious. Page speed affects both rankings and conversions, and cheap shared hosting is one of the more common reasons an otherwise well-built site loads slowly on a phone.
The practical test is simple: open your site on a mobile connection. If the first content appears within about two seconds and the site stays up during your busy hours, your hosting is not your problem and upgrading will not help. If it takes five or six seconds and your images are already optimised, hosting is a reasonable suspect.
Before spending money on a bigger plan, rule out the cheaper causes: uncompressed images, too many plugins, no caching, and render-blocking scripts. In our experience most slow WordPress sites in Pune are slow for those reasons rather than for lack of server power. The costs beyond hosting
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | Rs. 800 – Rs. 1,500 / year | .in is usually cheaper than .com. Renewal prices differ from first-year prices here too. |
| SSL certificate | Free – Rs. 5,000 / year | Let’s Encrypt is free and adequate for most sites. Paid certificates matter mainly for ecommerce trust seals. |
| Backups | Free – Rs. 500 / month | Check whether restores are free. Some hosts charge for the restore, not the backup. |
| Maintenance | Rs. 2,000 – Rs. 8,000 / month | Updates, security patches, monitoring. Optional until the day it is not. |
| CDN | Free – Rs. 2,000 / month | Cloudflare’s free tier is genuinely useful for most Indian business sites. |
A realistic all-in annual figure for a small business website in India is Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 20,000, depending on whether you pay someone to maintain it. Our guide to website maintenance cost in Pune covers that side in detail.
How to choose without overthinking it
- Start on shared hosting unless you already know you need more. It is cheap and reversible.
- Check the renewal price before you enter card details.
- Pick an Indian or Singapore data centre if your customers are here.
- Confirm backups are included and restores are free.
- Move up only when you have evidence – slow response times at peak, or resource limit errors in your logs.
Hosting is not where you should be looking for competitive advantage. It is where you should be avoiding avoidable problems. Spend the saved money on speed work and content, both of which return more.
When to actually upgrade
Three signals justify moving up a tier, and none of them is a salesperson’s recommendation.
Your site slows down at predictable times – during a campaign, in the evening, after a post does well. That is resource contention, and a VPS fixes it.
You see resource limit or 508 errors. Your plan’s ceiling is being hit. Upgrading is the correct response.
Downtime now costs real money. Once you are taking orders online, managed hosting stops being an indulgence. The maths changes when an hour offline has a rupee value.
If you are unsure which of these applies to you, send us your URL and we will check the response times and tell you plainly whether hosting is your bottleneck – it often is not, and we would rather say so than sell you an upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does web hosting cost in India per month?
Shared hosting runs Rs. 200 to Rs. 800 a month, and is fine for a brochure site with modest traffic. A VPS costs Rs. 900 to Rs. 4,000 and suits a busy WordPress site or a small store. Managed cloud hosting runs Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000 and makes sense once downtime genuinely costs you money. Add 18% GST, and remember that most advertised prices apply only to the first billing term.
Why does hosting get more expensive at renewal?
Because the headline price is an introductory rate, usually tied to a multi-year prepayment. Renewal is commonly two to three times the first-term price. This is standard practice across almost every Indian and international host, so the honest way to compare providers is to look at the renewal rate rather than the banner price.
Is cheap shared hosting bad for SEO?
It can be, indirectly. Cheap shared plans put hundreds of sites on one machine, so your site slows down when a neighbour gets busy, and page speed is a ranking factor as well as a conversion factor. If your site loads in under two seconds on a phone and stays up, your hosting is fine. If it does not, hosting is a plausible cause worth testing.
Should I host in India or abroad?
If most of your visitors are in India, a server in India or nearby Singapore will feel measurably faster than one in the US or Europe. That said, a CDN removes most of the difference for static content, so location matters less than it used to. For a business selling only in Pune or Maharashtra, an Indian data centre is the simpler and better default.
What else should I budget alongside hosting?
A domain at roughly Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,500 a year, an SSL certificate which is often free through Let’s Encrypt, backups if the host does not include them, and a maintenance arrangement for updates and security patches. For most small business sites the true annual figure lands between Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 20,000 once everything is counted.
